Bug Description

I installed Pixma TS6052 as a wireless network printer on a Kubuntu 20.04 system and use Skanlite for scanning. The scanner is capable to scan up to 1200 DPI.

When I scan wirelessly with 300 DPI it goes fast and everthing is OK. When I scan with 600 or even 1200 DPI the scanner is working even if it lasts of course a bit longer. But then when the scanner is ready Skanlite brings an error message "invalid argument". This is only at 600 or 1200 DPI. At 300 DPI all is fine.

Maybe it is a tomeoit issue because the scan process last longer with 600 / 1200 DPI?

I have the exact same problem with an HP Scanlite Pro 3500 f1 using the ESCL driver. In 300 dpi the scan is quick and accurate, but if I increase resolution (if only to 400 dpi) the device seems to operate in another mode (perhaps 600 or 1200 dpi that is down-sampled in SW?) and when scanning completes the "Invalid argument" error shows.

I have tried to scan using xsane but it crashes (also in 300 dpi) instead of showing an error. I can do a 75 dpi preview scan here though.

(I have also tried to scan using stock Ubuntu 20.04 from a live image and and the Kubuntu live image as well, but I'm not able to get it to work.)

If I find the time I will try to catch some logs.

It seems like something fails in the communication between Skanlite and lower layers, since the text "Waiting for the scan to start" shows the whole time the scanner is actually scanning. (As stated in the original post, once it's done scanning the "Invalid argument" error appears.)

I started skanlite with the command:
SANE_DEBUG_ESCL=128 SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=4 skanlite 2&> skanlite_debug.txt

* Selected the device corresponding to the ESCL driver for my HP 3500 f1.
* Checked that 600 dpi was selected as resolution and hit the scan button.
* Waited for the scan to fail and then some.
* Discarded the error message.
* Clicked the close button in Skanlite.

I tried to wait some time between each step so that they could be distinguished in the log.

skanlite_debug.txt is attached.

Can reproduce this issue with Ubuntu 20.04 fully up to date as of Oct-2021. Using a Brother HL-L2390DW in my case. This is a regression as it used to work fine in Ubuntu 18.04.

Seem to be related to this; https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plasma-desktop/+bug/1920596

Managed to get it working above 300dpi using the official SANE PPA https://launchpad.net/%7Esane-project/+archive/ubuntu/sane-release
