Bug Description

Binary package hint: simple-scan

Maverick 32 bits, all updates installed.
When scanning multiple pages from the sheet feeder in one go, Simplescan does not release the last page until either a new scan is started or the program is closed. It stops scanning though, so I assume it does recognize that the sheet feeder is empty.
This is awkward when scanning double sides pages, because I would need to do the odd pages first, then reload all pages into the sheet feeder and scan the even pages. To do so now, I must pull the last page out of the scanner with mild force.

cheers
Tom

Is this specific to simple scan or does it happen with other scanning software (xsane) as well?

Tried XSane, but that does not have the option 'all pages from feeder', only a number of pages. So far, only SimpleScan exhibits this behaviour.
Only after I select 'new scan' or close SimpleScan the last page is thrown out and I get the popup message 'scan job completed'.

Could you attach a screenshot of the message and provide make, model and id of the scanner?

Been quite busy, sorry for the long delay.
Scanner is a HP c7280 Photosmart, connected through LAN (using HPLip for drivers, management etc).
Should have mentioned that in the first post.

Sure, I'll make a screenshot of the message, but that is no error message. It's the correct thing I should see whenever a last page is thrown out and the job completed. Thing is that the last sheet is not thrown out unless the job is ended client side either by starting a new scan or by closing Simplescan altogether.

So here's one.
In fact this one is taken from my laptop which runs Precise AMD64. Same story.

Did a scan of 3 pages in one go, last one stayed stuck 90% out. Led kept blinking as in 'busy'.
Saved the scan, paper stayed stuck. Closed Simplescan, paper gets thrown out. Message pops up as expected (see attached image).

cheers
Tom

The last scan does not complete when running the Simple Scan auto feeder. Even when I restarted Simple Scan it did not want to do new scans right away. I found out that if you leave it long enough (30+ min) it did complete one time. I was also able to do a series of multiple scans without restarting but there was a long delay (2+ min) between each scan. The paper would advance and eventually the previous scan would complete.

I am running Simple Scan 3.4.1 with Ubuntu 12.04.01 on an HP p6530f.
Printer is USB connected.

could you attach a debug log of a session where it finally succeeds?

After doing some additional reading on the Ubuntu site I tried using xsane instead of simple scan. I found that the problem was also present in xsane. I am going to repost this bug on the xsane site instead of here since that appears to be the source of the scanner code.

It appears simple scan completes the scanning process it just takes 2 min per scan. That delay is long enough that most people, including myself, don't wait that long. Note most times after fresh reboot I get several scans including multiples without the 2 min delay before it slows down.

I can run a debug but I have never run a debug on Ubuntu so I don't know details. If you can point me to the the correct information I will read up on how to do it.

I do not think you can contact anyone regarding xsane. You can try to contact the sane-devel mailing list.

I have observed this problem as well, using 13.04 x86_64, 3.6.1-0ubuntu1. My scanner is a HP Photosmart Premium c309a, connected via the network.

When scanning multiple pages, the scanner will not eject the last page and waits for additional pages to be fed. It seems it's not able to detect that there are no more pages in the feeder.
