Same for MG5250. The scanner worked just fine before.

I've followed the advice given here and upgraded to the latest experimental libsane and libsane-common, which fixed the problem. simple-scan now works again with my Canon PIXMA MG5250.

Martin, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases your release is EOL.

If you have an issue in a supported release (ex. 16.04) please file a new report, and feel free to subscribe me to it.

I did similar to comment #5 but what follows is an updated package list to install:-

At the time of writing this, these 3 packages need to be downloaded and installed.

libsane-common_1.0.26~git20151121-1_all.deb
libsane_1.0.26~git20151121-1_amd64.deb
libjpeg62-turbo_1.5.1-1_amd64.deb

The first two packages can be found in the Debian experimental libs at this link https://packages.debian.org/experimental/libs/

The last package I found in this link https://packages.debian.org/sid/libjpeg62-turbo

In some cases you may need to navigate to an ftp mirror site to actually download. Once downloaded, simply install each package as root i.e sudo dpkg -i package

I have tested with simple-scan, xsane, and scangearmp and all works fine.

Dave Goldsbrough, it will help immensely if you filed a new report with Ubuntu via a terminal:
ubuntu-bug libsane

I am keen to help as much as I can, but I am new to this and not very good.
I tried as you suggested - some console messages and then a Problem in
libsane window which contained this:-
The problem cannot be reported:

This is not an official Ubuntu package. Please remove any third party
package and try again.

The console messages read:-
/usr/share/apport/apport-gtk:16: PyGIWarning: Wnck was imported without
specifying a version first. Use gi.require_version('Wnck', '3.0') before
import to ensure that the right version gets loaded.
from gi.repository import GLib, Wnck, GdkX11, Gdk

(apport-gtk:3429): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error:
gtk-widgets.css:65:17: Theming engine 'unico' not found
Gtk-Message: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is
discouraged.

Remember, at this point I am trying your request against a fixed system
given that I have installed some experimental packages.

If I can help further then I will try.
