3.13.3 regression: communication with Canon LiDE 60 fails

My Canon LiDE 60 stopped working with the recent simple-scan 3.13.3 in utopic. The scanner starts making a second of noise, then stops, and simple-scan gives a "failure to communicate with scanner" error.

The log file says

I'll attach the full log file for reference.

Downgrading to the previous 3.13.1 works fine.
