Thanks for the bug report. The screenshot you attached does look unusual. How did you get into this state? Did you maximize the Shotwell window, or attempt to enter full-screen mode (e.g by pressing F11)? Or did you merely double click the photo to open it? Does this happen every time you run Shotwell?

Double clicked the image, and happens all the time.
Ubuntu 2D does not happen.

Odd. Could you try this? Run Shotwell from a terminal:

$ shotwell

Now double click an image. If the display looks wrong, do you see any error messages or other output in the terminal window?

Also, are you using a theme other than the default (Ambiance)?

Terminal does not show an error message, I use the default theme (Ambiance). Then came the problem when I first unmaximized Shotwell Photo Viewer, and then maximize again.

Hm. Are you starting Shotwell in a maximized state? We know that can lead to display glitches:

I have this same bug when using the theme Ambiance. Every time I double click on a .png file, Shotwell opens up as a 'restored' (visible but not full screen) window. When I them maximise the window the bottom toolbar is missing. I then have to restore the window, and then maximise it again at which point the toolbar appears.

John, I'm not sure but I would say that it seems rather a wm,unity issue than a shotwell one...
