Bug Description

When clicking on the iphone icon in shotwell, I get the following error message : "impossible de récupérer les aperçus depuis l'appareil photo : Erreur indéfinie (-1)" wich would mean in english "can't get thumbs from camera, undefined error".
It used to work for about tow or three month ago though. I suspected the usb cable and bought a new one, but still doesn't work.
thanks for your help.
I am using ubuntu 11.04

Hi Didier,

Did you make sure your iPhone was unlocked when you connected it? If your iPhone is 4-digit passcode protected then you need to enter your passcode and unlock it before connecting it to the computer. Natty is very serious about this, though earlier versions of Ubuntu didn't seem to be.

Lucas

Hi Lucas,
Yes indeed, the iPhone was unlocked, ready for use on the main menu.
Thanks for helping.

Didier

closing, seems like it was not a shotwell issue

Changed in shotwell (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Invalid

Please Help. What kind of issue is this, if not a shotwell issue ?

Eric Gregory (eric-yorba) wrote :

Most likely it's a GPhoto issue.

What version of iOS are you running?

didier,

To follow up, gPhoto is the library Shotwell uses to talk to cameras and import their photos. It could very well be that gPhoto is the culprit here, but it's odd to me that it would be working for so long and then stop, especially since there hasn't been any major changes to gPhoto in quite a while.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if your iPhone's operating system was updated in that time. Apple has historically made changes to the iPhone's OS that make it difficult for third-party apps to talk to them. It could very well be that the iPhone OS updated recently and that's causing the problem.

If you could let us know what version of the iPhone's operating system you're using, that might be helpful. Also, try this from the console:

$ sudo apt-get install gphoto2

(This is to ensure that the gphoto2 console application is installed, which it might be already.) Then try this with the iPhone attached and unlocked:

$ gphoto2 --shell

If you get an error doing this, then it's definitely a gPhoto problem and not something Shotwell can work around.

... I don't know about the iOS. It is an iPhone 3G. A friend told me I have to plug it to an apple computer to know about the iOS version, but I don't have an Apple computer. I will ask at the store I bought it.
I will try the gphoto commands first and come back.

When issueing the command

$ gphoto2 --shell

I get a new prompt starting with gphoto2

gphoto2: {/home/lesdoublefaces} />

I then tried a ls command, and after a long time I got this error message:

*** Erreur ***
PTP erreur d'entrée sortie

*** Erreur ***
Une erreur est intervenue dans la bibliothèque d'entrée-sortie ('Erreur indéfinie'): Pas de description d'erreur disponible
*** Erreur (-1 : "Erreur indéfinie") ***

Which I would translate by :

An error occured in the input-output library ('Undefined error') : No error description available.

What should I do next ?

Okay, so that means this is definitely a GPhoto issue. You should file a bug with GPhoto and/or ask about this on their mailing list.

The GPhoto home page is here:
http://www.gphoto.org

Their bug tracker is on Sourceforge here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gphoto/

BTW, your iOS version can be found in Settings->General->About->Version
