Shotwell 0.14.1 here.
Steps to (re)produce the bug:
1) import images without copying -> thumbnails and images are displayed correctly, as per the orientation tag
2) double click on a "vertical" (i.e. taken in portrait mode) photo
3) right click -> open with external editor (gimp)
4) gimp asks if I want to rotate or not -> yes, rotate
5) modify image, then save
6) shotwell starts eating 100% cpu and eventually crashes; when re-launched, the image is distorted (see screenshot)
issue 6) happens about 80% of the time.

For the record: photos were taken with a Canon 60D camera, and are located on an external ext4-foramtted USB hard drive.
