I think your sudo timeout ran out before the upgrade finished. Can you do the following:
sudo aptitude purge hplip
Remove the hplip user in System -> Administration -> Users & Groups
sudo aptitude install hplip
Does that work? |

Yes, it should, but this is a duplicate that is fixed in Intrepid, but when you upgrade you're still using Hardy's shadow, so and on Hardy it's not fixed. |
