sflphone fails to start

when I start sflphone on a precise host I always get a popup warning me of "Unable to initialize.
Make sure the daemon is running.
Error: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)"

There is no indication in the documentation how to start the daemon or that manual intervention would be necessary.
