Bug Description
Binary package hint: sendxmpp
Version 1.14-1
Current it is only possible to choose 'message' or 'headline' as message type. However my XMPP client, pidgin 1:2.5.2-0ubuntu1, doesn't display message of this type. When you broadcast a message it gets the type 'normal'.
This patch allows you to set the type to a custom value.

Upgrading to a new upstream version also solves this. I am now using 1.18, though I don't know exactly when the --messages-type cmdline arg appeared. In 1.18 the default type is 'chat', in fact.
http:// platon. sk/cvs/ cvs.php/ sendxmpp/ sendxmpp? rev=1.18& content- type=text/ x-cvsweb- markup has the code, and downloading that to /usr/local/ bin/sendxmpp (chmod 755) is sufficient to test the new version.
