This bug also appears when trying to run swell-foop:

$ swell-foop
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

I am marking this bug as fixed since:

 - lightsoff and swell-foop no longer depend on seed
 - no other package depends on seed
 - seed does start up without crashing
 - this bug is marked as fixed upstream

Thanks to the Ubuntu devels for the newer package versions that work!
