Bug Description
After updating my system (ubuntu 20.04) I ended in situation with sddm running, but without displaying login screen. Manually starting X in a tty2 let me google for the issue and find old ticket about sddm behaving bad if no valid opengl implementation available. Quick check with glxinfo showed that SGI implementation was used instead of NVIDIA one. After dist-upgrade kernel image and modules were rebuilt and sddm started normally.
I understand that in this case sddm failed to start due to unfortunate circumstances resulting in invalid system state. However, in this state it is not possible for inexperienced users to google for the problem. Please, consider at least better diagnostics for the situation until upstream fixes the issue. Spoiler: the original ticket is from 2017 https:/
