Bug Description

Binary package hint: scim

The SCIM menu icon is ugly, confusing and looks out of place. It should be replaced with a newer icon, but also one that represents what SCIM does (ie. a button with a foreign character on it).

Here is a debdiff for jaunty to replace the current icon:
http://is.gd/hpZ7

With this icon (from gnome-icon-theme):
http://is.gd/hpZy

The new icon is better, as it represent a button on a keyboard, but also has a foreign character on it, symbolizing what SCIM does.

Can you propose that to the Upstream developers?

disclaimer: I'm scim Debian maintainer and part of the upstream team

I agree there may be room for improvement of the current icon. But I'm not sure that http://is.gd/hpZy is really an improvement

1) I believe I've seen a very similar icon for a keyboard configuration tool or some other app -> potential for confusion
2) á is not a good representation of what scim does. That character is usually input without any IME

scim-setup shows the Japanese a letter as icon now (at least since trusty) so I close this ticket as fixed.

The icon is from the Humanity theme. Scim itself still uses the old icon. Reopening.
