Bug Description

Binary package hint: scim

In the default installation of Ubuntu 8.04, scim is enabled by default. And the default configuration has "shift+space" as a setting to trigger SCIM.

In my opinion this is retarded, as it makes entering capitalized text (by using the shift key) impossible.
This made me wonder if my keyboard needed a replacement for maybe a week until i figured out what was to blame.
The problem occured to me several times a day.

I had exactly the same. Using Shift+Space is dumb, if you're asking me. It's a commonly used key combination, especially in the English language (the capital i, with a space right afterwards).

The other keybindings aren't well chosen either (defaulting to Ctrl+Alt+Right which is mostly used for virtual desktop switching)

I agree this is a problem. It took me some time to realise that it was the shift+space combination that was responsible, as it just kept popping up while typing. I expect most users of messengers would experience this issue, when many have no need for SCIM (or even any idea what it is).

SCIM must be disabled by default.

I also agree, the default keybindings for SCIM are very annoying, they conflict with other applications and they are downright annoying. Either disable SCIM by default or change the keybindings to something more unique.

Yowch.

I once thought that Shift-Space would be a good place for NBS
(Non-Breaking Space). That was a _big_ mistake.

Also, people frequently do hit shift before space when the next word's
first letter is capitalized. After all, that didn't matter before.

(This is a major problem in Germany, because we have so many capitalized
words. :-P )
