Try this:

edit /etc/schooltool/standard/schooltool.conf and ensure that reportlab_fontdir contains ubuntu-font-family, like this:

reportlab_fontdir /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-liberation:/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family

and that the fonts are installed:

apt-get install fonts-ubuntu-font-family
