scanbd blocks all sane access to scanner device

When scanbd is running, other sane frontends cannot access my scanner. There is no documentation leading me to expect this, and no suggested workaround.

Expected behaviour: the default install should provide a straightforward path to modifying the sane installation to use scanbm, as described in the arch HOWTO.
