Did you test to build with other JVMs on other architectures? Does it build fine?
IOW, Is this problem specific to Scala or to JamVM?

no, but you could find out about this yourself (on x86 too).

 - install icedtea-6-jre-jamvm
 - in /etc/java-6-openjdk/jvm.cfg, move the jamvm line to
   the top (or start java with the -jamvm option).
