Bug Description

Binary package hint: simple-scan

Simple Scan notes:
"there is no scanner- check that the scanner is turned on"

After pushing the "acquire" button it notes:
"no scanner available, connect a scanner"

Works fine in Windows XP.

As per the SANE project, this device has minimal support via experimental CVS:
http://www.sane-project.org/unsupported/canon-3200f.html

However, the experimental CVS wasn't transferred over when they moved from CVS to git. A copy of the experimental files are found at:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane-backends/+bug/738302/+attachment/4803236/+files/cs3200f.tar.gz

A patch that may be needed to compile against master branch:

More likely related to the underlying libsane. Added scanner name into title.

Giuliano: It looks like Canon scanners are particularly badly supported under Linux (based on the Sane web pages).

doing some triaging here. Are you logged in on the console or in X on those machines? Or via ssh or similar mechanisms? Does "sane-find-scanner" see the scanner? Does "sudo scanimage -L" work?

$ lsb_release -d
Description: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS

$ lusb | grep Canon
Bus 002 Device 010: ID 04a9:2216 Canon, Inc. CanoScan 3200F

$ sane-find-scanner
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9, product=0x2216, chip=GL841?) at libusb:002:010
found USB scanner (vendor=0x147e, product=0x2016) at libusb:001:003
  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

$ scanimage --list-devices
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

Confirmed: Multiple users

However, I think given http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-CANON
I doubt there is much change; the 3xxx and 4xxx seem to be pretty dead.

Thanks, Paul, for supplying the requested information. I'm sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

sane-find-scanner does see the scanner, but scanimage does not. What about "sudo scanimage -L"? Does that show anything? Can you detach the other scanner (" found USB scanner (vendor=0x147e, product=0x2016) at libusb:001:003").

Furthermore, if you have the chance, please try the trusty live CD. And see what the results are there. It would be nice if you can supply the same information when booted to trusty.

But indeed, all GL841-based scanners are showing as unsupported upstream so the chances are slim.

Have you contacted Canon about the lack of Linux support? Maybe they listen to their customers?!
