Bug Description

I have a usb scanner, and in dapper this isn't detected by scanimage -L. This is
a permissions problem, and I can fix it by running:

sudo chmod root.scanner /dev/bus/usb/002/002
sudo chown 660 /dev/bus/usb/002/002

This makes scanimage -L find the scanner, and I can then use The GIMP to scan
images just fine.

(BTW, this feels like the same bug as bug 22438)

Confirmed here as well. I noticed that the bug appeared when hotplug was
removed. According to the dapper roadmap there is a major upgrade of udev in
which hotplug (which originally handled the issue of setting permissions here
according to the bug you cited) was removed. Devs does this mean that udev is
not doing this job (and others) properly (yet?)?

Hi Tollef!

It seems that libsane does not ship any udev rules file. It should, otherwise
permissions cannot be adapted.

Apparently, I had forgotten to upload a new, fixed version of sane-backends. I have now uploaded it, and it should fix
this problem for you.

Sorry for the inconvenience, and please reopen the bug if your problem is not fixed by upgrading to sane-backends 1.0.16-
5ubuntu1.
