Bug Description

xsane fails to scan with above mentioned scanner. It seems that initialization fails.
It used to work but I had to wait for five minutes or so after plugging in. In those minutes nothing happened then
it initialized. Right now nothing happens when I try to scan and at the second try gives an error message.
I will give the exact error messages in a comment.
If someone tells me how to debug this issue I will be happy to do so.

Same here. Running Jaunty 9.04 x64 on a xeon quad-core 16G ram. xsane seems to find the scanner just fine - the Standard Options windows titlebar calls it "Canoscan FB630U:003".

File->Info shows the following :

Vendor: CANON
Model: Canoscan FB630U
Type: flatbed scanner
Device: 003
Loaded backend: canon630u:libusb:002
Sane version: 1.0.19

Attempting a preview or a scan just results in xsane darkening as it goes to lala-land. I eventually have to force-quit it.

Tell me what you need to debug the problem, I'll do my best.

D.

Same issue as Halfwalker, presenting same symptoms. Running 32-bit Jaunty on a Core2Duo with 4G RAM. Has anyone found a way to load a different backend to make this scanner usable?

I have the same problem here on Karmic. It might be interesting to add that when I start a scan with "scanimage -d canon630u", I hear a very high-frequent noise coming from the scanner, but nothing else happens. I have even bought another scanner of the same type, and that one shows exactly the same behaviour.

The scanner worked in Jaunty, however. I'm going to try to install the older version of libsane from Jaunty and try to see if that helps.

Gonzhauser, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Is this an issue in a supported release? If so, could you please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 228152
