Bug Description

There is a dispute in Debian about the package name for the sane library.

I don't like that we seem to be blocking sane-backends indefinitely because of this bug.

What is the way forward please?

As far as I can see the Debian bugs are all closed - looks like the maintainer isn't pushing on this further. Can we close this bug and let 1.0.27-3.1 migrate?

I believe we need to add a transitional package for the update to work smoothly.

I haven't worked on this yet because I wanted to take the time to test the situation with and without a proposed transitional package and honestly, it didn't look to me like a very high priority yet.

It's been blocked in disco-proposed for 32 days.

This package is in testing. Why hasn't the sky fallen in in Debian?

Debian only had libsane1 in Unstable so Debian's situation is not as serious as Ubuntu's.
