got it working by adding `brother3` to `/etc/sane.d/dll.conf` as the driver is in `/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane/libsane-brother3.so` and adding `usb 04f9 0255` to `/etc/sane.d/brother.conf`.
