I've tested this on Dell 170L and Dell 210L desktops, and Dell Inspiron 1300 laptops: all identical errors.
I've test this in Ubuntu 5.10 and it works fine:
Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf
Processing section "[homes]"
Processing section "[printers]"
Processing section "[print$]"
Loaded services file OK.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The cache directory for samba is created by the init script when the samba daemons are started. Since the samba daemons are not started (even not installed) on the livecd, the cache directory is not created.
