Bug Description
One of the most common usages of smbclient is to let it read data from standard input and put this data onto a Windows (-like) share. There is a bug in smbclient which lets this fail regularly with the error NT_STATUS_
Surprisingly, in oneiric x86-64, the smbclient package is affected by this problem (the ubuntu people didn't seem to test this basic functionality), and even more surprisingly, it hasn't been fixed for months now.
The samba people obviously don't plan to do anything about it: the bug has been reported in September 2011, somebody has made patches to correct the problem, but the bug still has status "NEW".
Therefore, I wanted to see what happens if this bug is reported here. I know many people who do their backup in production environment like
tar ... | gzip (or other filters) | smbclient .. -c 'put - ...' ...
I have to stress again that this technique is used widely, and that its very important that it works reliably; thus, something really should be done about the bug.
The original bug report is here:
