Bug Description

Binary package hint: samba

1. Share folder on Feisty (e.g. r-click on folder in Nautilus, Share Folder, share through Windows Networks (SMB).
2. Attempt to access share through OSX 10.4 (e.g. Finder | Network | Mshome | Feisty-desktop | Connect
3. Choose SMB/CIFS shared volume to connect to.
4. Authenticate (Workgroup/Name/Password.)

This creates error message: The alias "Feisty-desktop" could not be opened because the original item cannot be found.

I have two mac laptops with the same problem. They can see each other on the network, and share with WinXP (dual-boot on the same machine as Feisty). But they cannot share with Feisty.

The reverse is also a problem:

1. In Feisty, open shared Mac OSX 10.4 computer on the network (e.g. Places | Network | tiger-share. Shared Mac folders will now be viewable.)
2. Attempt to open shared folder.

This creates error message: The folder contents could not be displayed. You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "folder_name".

I have solved my problem... when first creating a samba share I did not know that samba has a seperate list of users from the normal login of ubuntu...

I still consider this issue a bug because It should be much easier to set up sharing in ubuntu, i shouldn't have to go into the terminal to create a samba shared user... maybe when you create a share, ubuntu should automatically add the user that wants to share the file to the samba list of users, or ask to specify a user/password to share with. so that you are not left thinking that sharing in ubuntu doesn't work...

after scouring the forums I was able to get my sharing up and running... its great now that its working, but setup could be even easier... with no need for terminal... OS X seems to be very good at this.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SimpleSambaIntegrationSpec attempts to address the difficulty you encountered. If any qualified person can help fill out this spec, please do, so that it might have a shot for feisty+1.
