This was because I had deleted smb.conf to make some other product work.
The solution as suggested by aptitude was:
sudo cp /usr/share/ samba/smb. conf /etc/samba/smb.conf
sudo dpkg --configure -a
However this did moderately break my upgrade so I suggest that a more robust way of dealing with this might be implemented?
