May be same as 1675916. I have not been able to get samba operational in Ubuntu 16. Has always returned a package error. When samba is launched, nothing happens.

Hello and thank you for filing this report.

Can you provide the output of the commands from the logs:

Job for smbd.service failed because the control process exited with error code. See "systemctl status smbd.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.

Also, rather than trying to force things, let's get to a clean working apt (no dpkg errors) (so might require purging samba first) then attempt to install it fresh.
