Bug Description

fault appeared during an upgrade samba would not install
, returned exit code :
update-alternatives: using /usr/bin/tdbbackup.tdbtools to provide /usr/bin/tdbbackup (tdbbackup) in auto mode
Setting up samba (2:4.3.6+dfsg-1ubuntu1) ...
Job for smbd.service failed because the control process exited with error code. See "systemctl status smbd.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.
invoke-rc.d: initscript smbd, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing package samba (--configure):
 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
have had to remove samba completely will now not install.
This is in ubuntu 16.04

I have run into this bug twice before during upgrades for samba. samba in its present state is not useable on 16.04

sooo...

i managed to install samba now.
i presume you did the same thing as me, uninstalled samba and deleted /etc/samba.

the installer just presumes that this directory (or even the config file in it, i don't know) exists and fails when it doesn't.

please try the following (fixed it for me):

  sudo mkdir /etc/samba
  sudo cp /usr/share/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf

then install samba normally.
