Bug Description

I really do not know what program had the problem. I get an error message when I log into my Ubuntu account. So, I just tried to update software, as usual, but got a message that it could not do it. So, I do not know how to solve this problem.

The Software Updater error says,
The Package System is Broken. Check if you are using third party repositories. If so disable them since they are a common source of problems. Furthermore run the following command in a terminal: apt-get install -f.

Then in addition to this there is another pop-up window that says,
Crash Report
The application software updater has closed unexpectedly.
Send an error report to fix this problem
Ignore future problems of this program version.

So, now what should I do?

I had not used this computer for a long time. The computer has turned off unexpectedly. I was told that this might be due to overheating. So, I have not used it for a long time. The software updates were many, 360MB about. So, maybe there are too many updates to install now.

The computer works mostly but can not do certain things. I am using it to play music now.

Updated to Ubuntu 14.04 today. Installation baulked. Error ambiguous but suggested it might be a 3rd party repository but none were enabled.

Alternatively it suggested that I run "sudo apt install -f" in terminal. The following was the error...

~$ sudo apt-get install -f
