Rygel should run as an upstart service so it can be easily restarted.

does ubuntu use upstart for user session? rygel (normally) runs in the users desktop session, not as a system service (even though it can do that too.... startup script examples included in the source).

you can make rygel restart itself with: killall -HUP rygel

Yes upstart runs as session init too.

Bascially you would need file in /usr/share/upstart/sessions named rygel.conf with a content similiar to this:

start on desktop-start
stop on desktop-end

exec rygel
