I wanted to change from ubuntu14.04 lts to ubuntu16.04 lts , my machine crashed and during restart, the system come up with ubuntu16.04 and showed this error.
remark: when I started upgrade from 14 -> 16 firefox was running in the background and gets "grey".
I was running at terminal
sudo do-release-upgrade
