ruby-rvm install error dpkg-statoverride: error: syntax error: unknown group 'admin' in statoverride file

During install the following error is shown:

$ sudo apt-get install ruby-rvm
...

dpkg-statoverride: error: syntax error: unknown group 'admin' in statoverride file

After this failed install, trying to run rvm says:

$ which rvm
/usr/bin/rvm
$ rvm
mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/share/ruby-rvm/tmp': File exists
cat: /usr/share/ruby-rvm/README: No such file or directory

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

This is kind of a big deal. Is there a workaround for this?
