Failed to make ourselves RT: Operation not permitted

rtkit-daemon has been failing for months. I have no idea how to get it to tell me why.

AFAIK it started failing after a dist-upgrade but I cannot remember when. The syslog is filled with the daemon attempting to work.

Upgraded to Trusty and the problem appears to have fixed itself.
