Bug Description

When using the drempels screensaver, sometimes drempels won't stop after I successfully unlocked the screen. I then have to "killall -9 drempels" the whole thing to be able to work again. This is with "gnome-screensaver".

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release: 9.10

Upgrade to 9.10. No problems, save Skype/audio and jittery opening music at login.
Went to Screensaver Preferences, and scrolled through... until Drempels... locks machine, cant cant kill, cant escape GUI...
unsure how to change from Drempels, as it locks up if I leave unattended for over 5 minutes, as if I actually changed it to Drempels... which I hadn't... Any ideas? I know, I know... I'll go RTFM... but this isn't normal. Appreciate all your work... despite setbacks, it's getting better and better...!

I have the same problem. This screensaver is part of "rss-glx" packet. Open synaptic, search this packet and uninstall it. Or try with "sudo apt-get remove rss-glx" from console.

Yes, that's why I reported the bug against "rss-glx"!

How does this solve the bug? It's a workaround only.

Another workaround is to change to the console, log in and to issue:

killall -9 drempels

(Bugs #479219, #488746, and #530366 appear to be regarding the same problem, but I'm posting to this report as it's the earliest and none of the other reports seem to have got anywhere.)

I saw this behaviour in Karmic, and I am still seeing it in Lucid, on two different machines. Both machines are running with the nvidia-current drivers. One is x86 and running at 1280x800, the other is amd64 and running at 1920x1200. I'm not sure what further information would be helpful.

An alternative to 'killall -9 drempels' would be to Alt-F<key> to another terminal, log in, and send this command:

killall gnome-screensaver

Still doesn't fix the issue, obviously its just a work-around.

I have been using ssh from the server to kill my screensaver at least twice a month for a while now. Lucid 64bit. Using the nvidia restricted driver from the repos.
