`cdda' playback vs. noise from the cd drive.

Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Playing an audio cd using rhythmbox's `cdda' playback facility seems to have the cd drive spin with (standard) maximum speed. Entering ``sudo hdparm -E 4 /dev/cdrom'' the noise from the cd drive was tremendously reduced while the playback continued just fine. This is with the current Feisty 0.9.7-2ubuntu1 version. I'm not sure if the Edgy version didn't actually do somthing similar to what I described above, as I can't remember hearing my cd drive's spinning noise with that older version.

Thank you for your bug. Your problem is not clear, is that about your CD drive vibrating when reading a CD? That doesn't look like a software bug

Yes, this is more a wishlist item than a bug report.

I'd like to have rhythmbox make the cd drive not spin with the standard maximum speed, but instead slow it down so far that playback is still possible, but the cd drive is much less noisy with respect to mechanical vibrations, air flow noise and so on.

And again, I think (but didn't verify) that the Edgy version of rhythbox actually did something like that.

does it happen with gnome-cd or sound-juicer or other applications by example?

I am having a similar issue. The CD disc is constantly spinning while playing music off the CD. However, when I listen to music off the CD on Grip, this issue does not occur. The cd is spinning, but it silent.

could you open a new bug rather than reopening this one, that could be a different issue
