Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Hi,

Discogs cover art search fails for all tracks. In debug I see:

(00:57:59) [0x1334040] [LocalCoverArtSearch.search] /usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/artdisplay/LocalCoverArtSearchGIO.py:159: searching for local art for file:///storage/Music/Green%20Day/Dookie/10-When%20I%20Come%20Around.mp3
(00:58:03) [0x1334040] [LocalCoverArtSearch._enum_dir_cb] /usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/artdisplay/LocalCoverArtSearchGIO.py:116: okay, done; got 0 files
(00:58:03) [0x1334040] [EmbeddedCoverArtSearch.search] /usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/artdisplay/EmbeddedCoverArtSearch.py:164: not checking for embedded cover art in playing entry
(00:58:03) [0x1334040] [DiscogsCoverArtSearch.search] /usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/artdisplay/DiscogsCoverArtSearch.py:493: searching for (Green Day, Dookie)
(00:58:04) [0x1334040] [DiscogsCoverArtSearch.__search_cb] /usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/artdisplay/DiscogsCoverArtSearch.py:216: search returned nothing
(00:58:04) [0x1334040] [CoverArtDatabase.image_search] /usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/artdisplay/CoverArtDatabase.py:488: didn't find image for file:///storage/Music/Green%20Day/Dookie/10-When%20I%20Come%20Around.mp3

Please note the "search returned nothing" message. But when I open the search URL manually:

http://www.discogs.com/search?type=all&f=xml&q=Green%20Day%20Dookie&api_key=45be40f6dd

it displays 20 matches.

I too am seeing this issue.

Using tcpdump I found that discogs is returning "500 Client Refused" when RB tries to get the cover.
I'm not sure, but I wonder if the fact that, at least in my case, the UserAgent is "User-Agent: gvfs/1.4.1"
Of course using Firefox works just fine.

upstream says it's not a bug but the website used blocking rhythmbox now

for the record, what upstream said:

"Discogs staff have confirmed that rhythmbox users were simply placing too much
load on their systems, so they had to block us. Since I don't see a way for us
to cut down the request volume, I've removed the discogs cover search code
entirely."

Is there any way to add a patch that will allow RB to pull the cover art from the UbuntuOne Music Store? A simple drag/drop from the store works now, but that is quite some work for a large collection.

Didn't noticed this before. My attention was pointed at this through a User in our Forums. Tested this on Lucid, an saw that Coverart-Fetching isn't working here, too.

Are there any thoughts in solving this or workarounds maybe?

This is marked as "Not a Bug" upstream. At least, it still isn't working at all what is, in my opinion, a great loss of functionality. I mean: whe live in 2010 and this is a Default-Feature in most serious musicplayers. I tried to fake the user agent, but with no good effect.

Would it be possible to use other Services as discog?

do you have a lastfm account configured? in which case that should be working. itunes also require an account to get artwork downloading working, not sure if there is any legal way to download coverts otherwise

Afaik for the discog Service no account was needed. It's (in my personal opinion) not very good to force people to create an account somewhere to use this. I'm sure there are other ways that could be used, a.e. the U1Music Store, Amazon, Google Images ore something else.

right, and they their free servers were having issues handling the load created by those clients

> to create an account somewhere to use this

right, you can't force people to offer you service for free though, somebody needs to pay for the servers, the bandwith etc

> U1Music Store, Amazon, Google Images ore something else.

Those suggestions are nice, amazon usage condition requires to be authentificated and use their api though, not sure for google image. The music store could perhaps do something there, the issue is that most services like amazon will want to get something back from the service their provide, would it be only registered users, workarounding over to sneak datas without respecting the usage conditions could bring in trouble

At least a pop-up or sth else should ask you to register on www.somewhere.com if you want the cover art plug-in to function.

Sebastien, of course you are right with that point of view. Google Images or U1MS could be an alternative that maybe is worth checking it out. But I also have to ask how players like Amarok or Banshee are handling this. There it works.
