Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

The program does not generate a crash report.

The error I have posted in this ticket seems to either give the program a valid exit or not be a 'severe' enough instance to generate a crash / report.
(So maybe 'crash' was a bad word).

After the event of dropping a music item on my ipod (see ticket) rhythmbox closes as if I had simply clicked the [x] at the top right of the window.
To generate the error I posted above I had to run rhythmbox from a terminal.

I further then ran rhythmbox from the terminal using the --debug option to output the 0x80dc408 debug statements.

It's a crash, please try to obtain a backtrace http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash and attach the file to the bug report. This will greatly help us in tracking down your problem.

I plugged in my Ipod this morning to get further debug info.

Everything works now though (I had transfered music to it using Winamp at home).

Perhaps this bug is only a problem adding music to brand-new Ipod's?
It can't properly initialize a music folder or something similar perhaps?

At any rate, I cannot provide proper debug information as I can't get it to crash again...
(I could try erasing everything is you would like).

I can confirm this bug.
On a newly formatted ipod, rhythmbox repeatedly crashes when adding music.

I get the same segmentation fault as Mitch Mahan.

Running ubuntu 8.0.4.1 fully updated.

I will try another distribution to see if it is reproducible and then
report back here.

Could the bug please be reopened?
I am experiencing the same problems:

When adding songs rythmbox just segfaults.

On request i can try to provide debugging information. Please give me some guidance / hints on how to best provide the information needed.

It is a 4gb Ipod with video screen.

Sorry, but I'm not sure if I understand this correctly. I tried that but
as far as I could see there was no option to add the report to the existing
bug when doing this with apport. Do you really mean that I should file a new
report instead? This sounds silly to me because like this the other relevant
information contained in this report is not connected to the new report and
therefore most probably lost.

Sorry, if you really can't use the log when it's attached to a report rather
than submitted with apport. But I won't be able to submit it again for quite
some time because this is a problem on a computer I support for my mother and
I don't have access to it if I'm not at her place.

Additionaly the problem is now solved for her by initializing the iPod with iTunes
under MS Windows. The iPod was only initialized (clicking through some license
agrements) but no music was synchronized to the iPod. It was still empty when I
connected it to rhythmbox again. Then I could copy music on to the iPod without
a crash.

I also don't understand why this bug repeatedly gets closed as invalid if
several people independently report and confirm it. IMHO there is not much
doubt that there is really a bug. But again coming from a Debian perspective
I'm neither familiar with Launchpad bug statuses nor with bug handling best practices
in Ubuntu in general. But as a Debian Developer this does not really
increase my motivation to contribute to Ubuntu by providing bug reports if
I encounter bugs on Ubuntu machines.

The bug was closed because there's no backtrace on it without one the bug is no use. Follow this instructions and report a new bug with apport which should get an automatic retrace of the issue. Since you already have the .crash file : launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you're not running GNOME you can use the cli interface as apport-cli -c /var/crash/_crash.crash . Thanks again.

Hi,

This bug is valid but there are no crash reports generated, /var/crash is empty.
I get the "crash"/unexpected shutdown of rhythmbox when I connect a brand new ipod nano and try to drag-drop soe files in it.

Its 100% reproducable, please do not close this bug its happening for sure but there are no crash dumps to attach.

Here are the printouts, first I try to drag-drop a file to it, then I open the IPOD view and try to add a new playlist -> aplication is shutdown.

Oddly, this problem just started for me. This is the first time I've tried updating my iPod Classic 160 since upgrading to the beta of Lucid Lynx. Seems to affect only very large transfers - as stated earlier, closes Rhythmbox with a segmentation fault. Please advise. Still advisable to run backtrace?
