Bug Description
In the default Ubuntu theme, the pressed/activated and deactivated button states are very similar and hard to differ. It is therefore hard to tell from the first look, if the shuffle is enabled or not. I am attaching the screenshots.

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

I tried to change themes, a lot of them, and whichever I use, this problem persists. I really think there is no change at all on the buttons themselves. In every other application, the difference between a pressed and an unpressed button is clearly visible.

OK, I have just tried the Stylishdark-wps theme, and with it the difference between pressed and unpressed buttons in Rhythmbox is finally visible. So it seems like a theme problem, after all.

in fact it's not a rhythmbox issue, nautilus list/icon view buttons have the same issue, rather a theme one

This one seems to be solved in Wily.

Definitely not solved in Wily (15.10).
Its an irritating problem. Also with the Stylishdark theme the button state is still hardly visible.

This problem is certainly not solved in Wily (15.10). With the Stylishdark theme the button status is still hardly visible. The Highcontrast theme solves the button status problem but introduces another: on the window in focus, of the window buttons only the Close button is visible. And.... this is not a very attractive theme from an aesthetic perspective....

Working on a fix for this now. Not sure if I like the hover effect switching the direction of the gradient though, so disabled with an "X" for now...
X.primary-toolbar .button:
background-
border-
}
.primary-toolbar .button:checked{
background-
border-
}
Once I've got design sign off I'll make an MP. Not sure if this will be a change to widgets CSS or a separate RB file yet.

this bug also affects me (ubuntu 16.04 preinstalled on a dell xps 13) any fixes or workarounds?

I'm also affected.

Seems to be fixed in 16.04 now.

I'm not sure this is actually fixed in 16.04. Looking at my machine, I still don't think there is enough difference. I'll ask Trevinho to merge the changes in to Artful from comment #11 and see if it works better there. We can backport if so.

These still look too similar IMO

Even on close zoom, I cannot tell which screenshot shows pressed buttons and which screenshot shows unpressed buttons.
