Goto "Edit" -> "Preferences", then tab "Music" and select "Custom settings" for "Format settings". Choose a quality level (higher is better). That did the trick for me.

i can confirm this workaround - looks like the default after installing the software or even worse / the codec is set to an invalid value...

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version.
