Rhythmbox will not re-add files if they are in one's library with the "Watch my library for new files" feature.

Bug Description

I moved files within the directory I have rhythmbox set to watch, and it added the files without removing the previous. I decided to remove everything and re-add it, but when I browsed to the folder, it wouldn't re-add the music files to my library. (Even apt-get install rhythmbox&& apt-get remove rhythmbox wouldn't fix the problem.) To get the files back, I had to uncheck "Watch my library for new files" in the Preferences menu and then add the folder via the Import Folder feature.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
Can you please tell us the version of Rhythmbox you are having this problem with?

Also, I'm not sure if it matters, but it is the amd64 version (built for 64bit Ubuntu Feisty).

I'm using the same version and I think I have the same problem you're talking about. If I restart Rhythmbox, it will fix it, though.

We are closing this bug report as it lacks the information, described in the previous comments, we need to investigate the problem further. However, please reopen it if you can give us the missing information and don't hesitate to submit bug reports in the future. Also would be nice if you can try to reproduce your report with the new development version of Ubuntu the Gutsy Gibbon you can get a CD Image from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ , thanks in advance.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Rhythmbox 0.10.0 (on Feisty Fawn, not that this would matter much though)
2) Start Rhythmbox
3) Some directory used as the music directory, e.g. /home/wim/music
4) Selected the "Watch my library for new files" option
5) Close Rhythmbox, add new music file, e.g. /home/wim/music/foo.mp3
6) Start Rhythmbox, the new music file is NOT added to your Rhythmbox library -> this is the bug

Just tested with Gutsy rhythmbox and it seems to be resolved.

1. open rhythmbox and select a folder containing mp3's and also ticked watch folder for changes.
2. closed rhythmbox and verified that it was not running in the background with ps.
3. added a new mp3 to mp3 folder.
4. restarted rhythmbox and it immediately updated the list of files with the new mp3.

Any chance we can get that to Feisty Fawn? If the software is fixed, why are we still left in the cold?

Because backporting patches require lot of work to figure what code change fixed the bug, reproduce the issue, verify the patch fixes the bug, control it doesn't create any regression, etc and we can't do that for the hundred of thousand of changes done in the distribution during the 6 months of a new cycle, only important bugs and security issues are usually fixed to stable and that one is rather a minor one

Hm, isn't this a stand-alone piece of software?

No more than any other part of Ubuntu is a "stand alone" piece of software.. or what do you mean exactly?

So if I undertand it correctly, Rhythmbox is dependent on specific API's present only in Feisty Fawn, which would prevent me from upgrading Rhythmbox to the newest version? If that's the case, well, then there's not much I can do, I guess.

Sorry for the confusion.

Uhm, "specific API's present only in Feisty Fawn", I of course meant Gutsy Gibbon. And I meant the 0.11.2 version mentioned early.

you could probably build the gutsy version on feisty with some changes, but it depends on the gutsy libgpod to make artwork transfert work for example. We don't upload unstable versions to stable because that often bring new issues

No, install the gutsy package. It might work. expect breakage and a lack
of support.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
