This is because redmine requires version of rails <=2.3.8

If one could install multiple rails versions it would be great.

redmine 1.2.0 can be installed with rails 2.3.11 (and maybe 2.3.14), but ubuntu redmine package is 1.1.3
Upgrading redmine to the latest might help.

This works on debian :
redmine 1.2.1+dfsg2-2
ruby-rails-2.3 2.3.14-2
rubygems 1.7.2-1

Most problems come from rails. Patch updates often break redmine or are incompatible with xx version of rubygems.

Yes! But ubuntu has
redmine 1.1.3-2
which doesn't work

It is the second time redmine installation broken for me. I think I'll abandon using ubuntu redmine package and will install redmine manually...

Since no one asked me, i couldn't fix 1.1.3 just before oneiric was released. Too bad.
I'll try to provide a patch soon.

For me it turns out that the problem was that RMagick did not like the version of ImageMagick; i.e. in 11.10

sudo apt-get install redmine

fails with a version mismatch for ImageMagick.

I could install Redmine avoiding the ImageMagick version check by following directions in this post:

http://happy-coding.com/rmagick-is-not-accepting-imagemagick-version/

and adding RMAGICK_BYPASS_VERSION_TEST = true in /usr/share/redmine/config/environment.rb

Forgot to mention in my previous post that I also enabled this PPA https://launchpad.net/~ondrej/+archive/redmine for Redmine 1.2.
