The autopkgtest is directly based on the upstream testsuite, that passes fine on build for all archs, i386 [1] included. Same tests, same executable.

How does ubuntu's autopkgtest platform differ from the buildds? Different hardware/emulation/set of x86 features?

And now it passes on i386 as well, without any changes on the re2c end of things. Is this really a bug in re2c or its packaging?

I have experienced the same, tracked and found it to be resolved by other things.
