Bug Description

If I boot up a fresh Windows workstation and connect to it from Ubuntu with Rdesktop (Ubuntu Edgy or Gutsy versions), it works for the first cut and paste from Ubuntu to Windows, and vice-versa. But after that, it stops working. If I reboot the Ubuntu workstation, it works again, but then fails after the first time. This is happening at home on my Edgy workstation, and at the office on Gutsy. Once it occurs, it prevents cut and paste to/from multiple versions of Windows -- Windows XP, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, and Windows 2003 Enterprise Server.

There is a registered bug (1198945) at sourceforge about a clipboard
problem. It doesn't mention anything about full-screen mode, so I
decided to register a new bug. The request is:

Project: rdesktop
Request ID: 1336997
Summary: Copy/paste doesn't work in fullscreen
Open Date: 2005-10-25 06:40
Priority: 5
Assigned To: nobody
Submitted By: tomfa

Clipboard functionality (copy/paste between the RDP
session and X) works ok in default - windowed mode.

In full-screen mode (e.g. rdesktop -f <server>) it doesn't.

This bug was reported in Debian by Robert Trebula. The
report can be found at

are you using -5 in your rdesktop command line in order to force RDPv5? that seems to fix this issue for most people.

I also have a similar problem in Gutsy.

I cannot get copy/paste to work at all.

It used to work fine until the recent rdesktop update. ( 1.5.0-2ubuntu0.1)

I have tried -5, but this does not make any difference.
(I think version 5 is the default now anyway)

Maybe it's just a ("the") RDP-Server-clipboard-problem:

Maybe this copy/paste problem is the same.

I have been able to reproduce this in 8.10

Killing rdpclip.exe and restartign it solves the problem.

I don't think this an issue with just rdpclip.exe. I have been using remote desktop for years on xp and then vista. I have only encountered this problem recently switching to ubuntu (yay for me!).

I am unable to copy and paste in rdesktop when I use full-screen mode (-f) .
When I am in windowed mode, copy and paste seems to work most of the time. When it fails, killing rdpclip.exe and restarting it fixes the issue. This is on 8.04, 8.10, and 9.04 (alpha)

Kubuntu 9.10 , Windows Server 2003.

After rdesktop login to Windows Machine copy and paste is completely broken: I am unable to use copy and paste to paste between linux and windows, and I am ALSO unable to use copy and paste inside the remote machine at all (eg. copy a file in windows explorer).

Killing rdpclip.exe fixes the copy and paste issues on the Windows machine (can use copy and paste inside Windows, for example to copy a file in the windows explorer). However when I restart rdpclip.exe everything is broken again.

--> There is currently no way to copy and paste anything between Linux and the Windows remote host (apart from mapped local drives)

Please can the importance of this bug be raised, it's a pretty default function of a desktop be able to copy and paste. Being stuck on a windows network, like many I would assume, and having no choice in using Outlook and Internet Explorer for corporate apps I need to be able to cut and paste around 50 items a day between by terminal and the remote desktop. I also have no admin access to the TS box to kill rdpclip.exe. This is an extremely annoying bug and needs some attention. This bug was logged TWO YEARS ago?

Hi Psypher,

The importance of the bug is set according to the guidelines found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance

As such, it is set to Low because it is "A bug that has a moderate impact on a non-core application"

Also, rdesktop is not a package that is written by Ubuntu developers, instead it is written and maintained by the good people at http://sourceforge.net/projects/rdesktop/

As you can see from the top of the Launchpad bug page, this bug is linked to an upstream bug where the developers of rdesktop will actually see comments. That URL is: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1336997&group_id=24366&atid=381347

Again, that last URL is where the actual developers of the project will see your comments.

All the best,

Greg

On a fresh install 10.04 this problem still exists. I have tried with the options -5 and -r clipboard. To test this, open a file in nautilus, press ctrl-c, then go to a new rdesktop windows explorer window, right click and the paste option is disallowed.
