Hardy to Intrepid beta upgrade fails due to rarian-compat

Bug Description

Hi,

On two machines, a laptop and a desktop, running sudo update-manager -c -d fails to upgrade from 8.04.1 to 8.10 beta. Both systems are emt64 Intel's with core duo chips. Both are System76 machines. I've attached my dist-upgrade logs. The problem appears to be unmet dependencies.

Installing with the beta CD works fine and is the solution to fix the broken state of the computer (just ensure you don't format the disks and that you do assign the drives correctly).

Joey

Thanks for your bug report. Your log shows rarian-compat fails to configure very early on, which a lot of other stuff depends on

dpkg: error processing rarian-compat (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Changed in update-manager:
status: New → Confirmed
Changed in rarian:

This is bug 256131

The error is
Setting up rarian-compat (0.8.1-1ubuntu1) ...

update-xmlcatalog: error: entity already registered

dpkg: error processing rarian-compat (--configure):

subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

but I'm unable to reproduce it when upgrading from a fresh hardy setup.
