Bug Description

Binary package hint: randomsound

Since I upgraded to karmic, when randomsound is started, sound doesn't work in my system.

Hardware tab in Sound preferences windows shows no sound devices.

After stopping randomsound, everything returns to normality, sound works again, and Hardware tab in Sound preferences window shows my sound device.

This symptom is due to random sound grabbing the raw hw:, which blocks for nearly all modern sound devices driven by ALSA due to lack of support for multiopen.

Changed in randomsound (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Confirmed

Do you have an /etc/asound.conf or/and ~/.asoundrc* ? If so, please attach its/their contents.

i have exactly the same problem - randomsound prevents pulseaudio from detecting the sound device. Here is what happens:

% sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
                                USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0: root 2010 F.... arecord
                                 arny 2591 F.... audacious
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: root 2010 F...m arecord
/dev/snd/seq: timidity 2810 F.... timidity
/dev/snd/timer: root 2010 f.... arecord

% sudo apt-get remove randomsound
...
% sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
                                 USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0: arny 2402 F.... pulseaudio
                                 arny 2591 F.... audacious
/dev/snd/seq: timidity 2810 F.... timidity

(arecord is used by randomsound)

I don't think this is happening any more, there's a different problem instead: #590780 - but this one doesn't happen (to me) in 14.04.
