Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a user friendly Open Source Geographic Information System (GIS) that runs on Linux, Unix, Mac OSX, and Windows. QGIS supports vector, raster, and database formats. QGIS is licensed under the GNU Public License. Some of the major features include:
* Support for spatially enabled PostGIS tables
* Support for shapefiles, ArcInfo coverages, Mapinfo, and other formats supported by OGR
* Raster support for a large number of formats
* Identify features
* Display attribute tables
* Select features
* GRASS Digitizing
* Feature labeling

Note:
This package was available in Ubuntu for Dapper, Feisty and Gutsy.
The various related libs were available for some of these versions.
There is no recent versions for Hardy or Intrepid see -

This is a substantial program and is probably not a good one to leave out of the Ubuntu packages.
