Bug Description

[Impact]

 * To avoid bugs with newer Hardware and to allow users/admins to control
   the KVM guests correctly we usually try to backport major CPU-
   detect/control features back to at least the last LTS (currently Focal)
   In SRU Terms this is under the second entry in
   https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Other_safe_cases

 * In this particular case it is about Support for EPYC Milan chips
   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epyc#Third_generation_Epyc_(Milan)

[Test Plan]

 * First of all we'll (and have in advance) run general regression tests

 * Second you'd want to run this with host-model and host-passthrough on
   Rome / Milan chips to ensure no case is now falling in to a totally
   dysfunctional state

 * Qemu shall show to be aware of the new types

    x86 EPYC-Milan (alias configured by machine type)
    x86 EPYC-Milan-v1 AMD EPYC-Milan Processor

 * Finally migrations between old->new should be checked to work fine.

[Where problems could occur]

 * This kind of "add the new type" usually only s a problem in backward-
   migratebility which isn't supported anyway. Never the less the areas to
   look out for is behavior on various AMD EPYC chips. To ensure that old
   chips won't change in a breaking way (they might detect new features
   now, but not more) and that new Milan chips are now all detected
   properly.

 * This is not the first time new AMD chips need to add their definitions,
   for example bug 1887490 was similar

On the qemu side most bits are already present as far back as focal. The only things missing are the ibrs and svme-addr-chk flag.

On the libvirt side the same and fsrm (which is already in qemu)

Please consider adding/backporting these.

Of course there are a number of kernel commits, some/most listed in the qemu commit, that would need to be backported to enable all features. But even without them, this already works for the most part (tested on focal kernel 5.4.0-70).

Hi Markus,
thanks for your (two) reports.
I agree that if we can get it backported without wreaking havoc to existing systems and migrations we should do this. I've added a libvirt bug task and will prepare a PPA with preliminary fixes.

I can get access to a Rome system for some tests, but Milan I'm not sure so I might eventually have a few tests for you to do on the PPAs if that is not too much to ask.

Due to the Easter weekend and other in-flight SRUs for qemu/libvirt I can't promise an asap solution, might be after the weekend until the PPAs are ready :-)

I need to document some of my thoughts (for next time this comes up)

Doing this for recent EPYC we should as well consider the recent
intel chips as well. There we'd have Snowridge [1], but being an atom that
isn't the kind of chip that Ubuntu users of KVM (those that crave for the
latest chip features) are after. Being more and end user chip users are typically
ok to either miss a mini-feature benefit or are ok to run the latest Ubuntu
release. Therefore those do exists but are not needed here:

Grml - as always this kind of bugs tend to grow until they are unmanageable
and then it eventually seems better to just ask users to upgrade.

BTW Server-Team Backports [1] nowadays which can help in most cases and does
not have the most of the SRU burden as it is an opt-in solution.

No matter at which exact scope we end up with, since that is:
- clearly a feature
- very new (partially not yet merged upstream)
it is hard to quick-shove this even into Hirsute :-/

Also in the past it was useful to have it in a completed upstream release
to have more developers pick it up and due to that get coverage and issues
reported. That can often identify required follow on fixes.

Therefore on the timing of this I'd go a slightly bit slower. We might end up
on this by merging the new versions early in the cycle into 21.10 and at that
time re-spin the PPA builds we use here (with any later modifications that
might have happened.)

Until then we can already take a step at pre-verification.
The PPA holds builds with the changes as identified backported to Focal (if it
works). Groovy/Hirsute should be simpler than Focal once we eventually do the
full set for real SRUs.

Indeed TBH I'm considering to SRU these changes only to Hirsute (for being much
closer to the upstream changes, more appliciable and threby less churn and
regression potential). That would make it available to Ubuntu users (via 21.04
directly) and for Ubuntu LTS users indirectly via Server-Team-Backports [1]
as well.

I'll look at Focal and Hirsute PPAs based on this next week then.

Again, thanks for putting so much thought into this. Yes, the Rome-v2 hasn't been merged, yet. But is trivial, so I expect no problems.

As for the Ubuntu integration, targeting this for 21.10 makes sense. By then most things should be in place. In the meantime having a PPA or in the server-backports repo would be great.

Mid-term I think it would still makes sense to get it into focal proper. Icelake is there and it hasn't even launched, yet. AMD is the more attractive platform these days, so having good support is more than just nice to have. But I defer this judgement to the server-team and you.

I agree, all I'm saying is that if doability or regression risk parts us from the perfect solution this will be a valid fallback and this will never be a "everything is lost" case :-)

I tried all combinations of Focal/Hirsute as Host/Guest
Using Host-passthrough, Host-model and the newest named type available at the time EPYC-Rome.
With EPYC-Rome being just that

I can also confirm that focal works but Hirsute guests trigger the mentioned MSR error:

I have to state that "my" 7713 have erms and are thereby happy to start
with the EPYC-Milan type.

Obviously new types can't be migrated back, but that never was required.

 - since you have multiple EPYC chip types - when the time comes for
   this to become an SRU can I count on you to help test this again
   (in multiple releases)?

C) in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qemu/+bug/1921754/comments/7
   you said you had these MSR errors on "5.4.0-70 on both host and guest"
   with 5.4.0-71-generic (current). I don't see them. And the fix isn't there
   yet as the kernel bug will only be resolved the next kernel update.
   Therefore - did you really see this with the guest on 5.4 or was this
   a mistake?

I have retested with kernel 5.4.0-72 and qemu 1:4.2-3ubuntu6.15

With 5.4.0-72 on the host and 5.4.0-70 the MSR error (WRMSR to 0x48) is consistently there. After updating the instance to 5.4.0-72 the MSR error is gone without the need for the ibrs flag.
Booting mainline 5.11.14-051114-generic still has the other error (RDMSR from 0xda0).

So right now, I am using our build with the ibrs flag to get rid of the MSR 0x48 error on all distros, even though it's gone with 5.4.0-72 in the guest (and host).

The missing "erms" on my 7713 seems to stem from a buggy BIOS, I will recheck once I have an update from the vendor. The 7763 are on a different platform and the ones we have in production. Those work just fine and don't have any "scary" ECC errors ;-)

I am more than happy to do further testing with/for you.

I've had a few backport questions (about potential side effects) that I sorted out with Babu (thanks to him as well!).

With that all seems to be in place for another round of PPA updates to [1] combining several changes tat are pre-sniffed SRUs and now build together for all eventually targeted releases.
Those are mostly meant for my own pre-SRU regression testing - no need (but feel free if you want) for anyone else to try these as well.

I have an update regarding the missing "erms". This is apparently a bug in the Milan 1.0.0.1 AGESA, which should be resolved with the next update. Systems with Milan AGESA 1.0.0.0 are not affected.
