Bug Description

Binary package hint: qemu

I have an image which loads fine under Feisty and its Qemu. Installed Gusty clean on new partition. Installed Qemu from Synaptic. Executing Qemu to load image (Windows 98 image):
Windows 98 starts up, then I get a black screen in the window stating "Window Protection Error. You need to restart your computer".

This appears to be a Windows 98 error message.

I rebooted and ran Feisty, no problems with the image.

I'm having similar problems with qemu 0.9.0 and a win2k image; it stalls with near-100% CPU after running through the initial progress bar. Reverting to 0.8.2 from feisty solves the problem.

A similar problem is also described in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qemu/+bug/144368 .

I'm also experiencing a similar problem: with qemu 0.9.0 my windows-xp image stalls with ~100% cpu-usage after the first "resolution-change", i.e. after the text-based windows boot menu and before usually the windows-logo appears on a black screen with the blue progress-bar.

Reverting to 0.8.2 from feisty solved the problem. I do not get any messages on the console. How could I provide more information?

This is probably a duplicate of bug #123185. Try the hardy packages of qemu and bochsbios-qemu.

Indeed switching to hardy bochsbios fixed the problem for me. I'm now using gutsy qemu and hardy bochsbios. I installed bochsbios using:
sudo wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/b/bochs/bochsbios_2.3+20070705-2ubuntu1_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i bochsbios_2.3+20070705-2ubuntu1_all.deb

I have the same problem with my Win98 image and with Cirrus vga driver in qemu in Gutsy.
And option -std-vga cause BSOD in Win98.

I resolved it with copying "/usr/bin/qemu" from Feisty instalation.
I has also copy /usr/share/bochs/BIOS-bochs-latest and /usr/share/vgabios/* but these BIOSes aren't important.
After that all images are worked fine for me.
I didn't check network because I don't use it.
