Bug Description

The problem exists on hardy and on karmic.

on hardy :
libwebkit-1.0-2 1.1.5-1~hhwkt1
libwebkit-1.0-common 1.1.5-1~hhwkt1
python-webkit 1.1.5-0~hhwkt1
libsoup2.4-1 2.27.1-0ubuntu1~hhwkt1

on karmic :
libwebkit-1.0-2 1.1.12-1ubuntu1
libwebkit-1.0-common 1.1.12-1ubuntu1
python-webkit 1.1.5-1
libsoup2.4-1 2.27.90-0ubuntu1

It worked before webkit use libsoup. ( libcurl was OK.)
Is it a bug ?
If not, how to say to webkit, use the http_proxy environment variable ?

I don't use gnome. I use kde

There is an upstream webkit bug about this: https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25263
It has to do with webkit now using the libsoup backend instead of libcurl. This bug is the cause of a heap of applications not working with http proxies. For example Software Centre's screenshots are set as background images in a webkit WebView, so they don't load with an http proxy.

summary: - python-webkit doen't honor anymore http_proxy
+ python-webkit doesn't honor http_proxy anymore

Well, specifically, *python* webkit applications. Programs written in C/C++ can set up the proxy apparently (the webkit browsers for example).

I've created a patch which adds a "set_proxy" method to webkit/webkitmodule.c. I opened an issue in the upstream project's bugtracker and attached the patch to my comment: http://code.google.com/p/pywebkitgtk/issues/detail?id=53

Hopefully it can be merged upstream or, failing that, added to the patchset for this package.

Well... nice that there 's a patch available. What about bringing it to the stable or at least to the proposed updates since major features in actual Ubuntu releases like gwibber depend on this package...

I always wanted to give gwibber a try with FB, but I'm behind a proxy and until now I'm locked out.
I'd wish it wouldn't take another year until I can use it.

The patch has been accepted by pywebkitgtk project and merged upstream. See issue 53 (closed) here:

Just been hit by this in 11.10 using gramps.

Looking at the comments here and in the remote bugs, it seem that this problem is being sloped off as somebody else's problem and/or ignored.

It's beyond me to decide which of the myriad possible pieces of software should/could be fixing this. Does anyone have any idea if we will ever see any progress on this?

Sorry for reply only to you.
I can't any more login to launchpad : your page is too old ! even if I want to change my password.

gramps now use no more webkit for the maps.
We only use webkit for an internal browser which is masked by default.
I'm on oneiric ( 11.10 ) too and it seems to work.
Since a while, nobody complains from this.

I speak only about gramps. I don't know for other's projects.

As far as I can tell this still isn't released upstream. Can it be patched into the ubuntu version?

Does this package have a maintainer? This still isn't included in the precise package version.
