Binary package hint: python-xmpp
The project development has shifted from CVS to Git, but according to launchpad, the package contains the latest stable version released on 2007-12-19, which is inconsistent.

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. There's an open Debian bug to update to 0.5.0rc1, but there are several issues that the maintainer mentions there. I'm linking the bug in case anyone wants to work on this. Please report any other issues you may find.
